What Is the DELE B1 and What Is It For? — Complete Guide 2026

What is the DELE B1?

The DELE B1 (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera, level B1) is an official certificate issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. It certifies that the candidate has an intermediate level of Spanish according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Unlike other language certificates that expire, the DELE has no expiration date. Once you obtain it, it is valid for life. This makes it a long-term investment for your professional career and personal life.

Who issues the DELE?

The Instituto Cervantes is the public institution created by Spain to promote the teaching of Spanish worldwide. It is the only body authorised to administer DELE exams. The diplomas bear the signature of the rector of the Instituto Cervantes and are internationally recognised by companies, universities, and public administrations.

Structure of the DELE B1 exam

The DELE B1 exam is divided into four tests that assess fundamental communicative skills:

Test 1: Reading Comprehension (70 minutes)

It consists of 5 tasks with a total of 30 items. You will read texts of various types (articles, advertisements, emails, instructions) and answer multiple-choice questions or match information.

Test 2: Listening Comprehension (40 minutes)

It includes 5 tasks with 30 items. You will listen to conversations, monologues, news reports, and telephone messages, then answer questions about what you have heard. Each recording is played twice.

Test 3: Written Expression and Interaction (60 minutes)

It consists of 2 tasks. In the first, you must write a text of 100 to 120 words (letter, email, or message). In the second, a text of 130 to 150 words (article, blog post, or short essay).

Test 4: Oral Expression and Interaction (15 minutes + 15 preparation)

It consists of 4 tasks performed in front of two examiners. It includes a short prepared monologue, a photograph description, a conversation on an everyday topic, and a communicative situation simulation.

DELE B1 scoring system

The four tests are grouped into two blocks for grading:

To pass the DELE B1, you need a minimum of 30 points in each group, which equals 60% of the maximum score. Having a high average is not enough: you must exceed the minimum in both groups separately.

If you pass one group but fail the other, the score is not saved for future sessions. You will have to retake the entire exam.

What is the DELE B1 used for?

Obtaining Spanish nationality

Since 2015, citizens of non-Spanish-speaking countries applying for Spanish nationality must prove a minimum A2 level of Spanish. However, many immigration lawyers recommend presenting the DELE B1 because it demonstrates a stronger command of the language and can facilitate the process. Additionally, the DELE B1 may exempt you from taking the constitutional and sociocultural knowledge test (CCSE) in certain cases.

University admission

Many Spanish and Latin American universities require a B1 or B2 level of Spanish to admit international students. The DELE B1 is accepted as proof of level at most higher education institutions in the Spanish-speaking world.

Career opportunities

In the job market, the DELE B1 demonstrates that you can communicate effectively in Spanish in professional contexts. It is especially valued in sectors such as tourism, international trade, education, and social services.

Personal development

Beyond practical uses, preparing for and passing the DELE B1 gives you a concrete learning goal and official validation of your progress in Spanish.

Differences between DELE B1 and DELE B2

The jump from B1 to B2 is significant. While B1 certifies that you can manage everyday situations and express simple opinions, B2 requires you to argue in detail, understand complex texts, and communicate fluently and spontaneously.
